Wake up people, this is serious...(THURSDAY 8:30AM)

...The "Surfing Mayor" Carl Beckman and Folly Beach City Council are trying to ban surfing from 2nd block east to 3rd block west. This is above and beyond the summer restrictions in place. This will ban surfing at the pier year round. This is not a joke. Read (The Journal) article in todays Post and Courier. The council meeting is Feb. 7th at 8:30 am in the Folly Beach City hall. Please stop by the shop for info and take this seriously as a community or it will pass and you'll never surf this again...

This isn't about "swimmer safety." This is about limiting surfing to the Washout; which means more surfers at the Washout; which means more parking meter money/parking ticket money for Folly Beach City Council to spend on those nice suits they are wearing.

Hey guys they tried this over at our island a couple years ago. We showed up to the vote with about a hundred people and they dropped the ban like a rock. So, stay informed and call city hall. Know when the meetings are and show up. I will be there. If you do not I promise they will pass it.

yeah you guys should really get on that. here in st. augustine you get a ticket for coming within 400 ft. of the peir and it sucks! that could be your future, act now.

I'll be spreading the word and prepping for battle.

First James Island puts a Wings across from my neighborhood and now Folly tries to pull this crap. We all need to get off our tail's and do all that we can to right this ship before she veers any further off course.

See you at city hall.

Thanks Ian. I will be there. i think we need to do more to get folks there. I just sent him an email-his email is on their website. everyone should send an email. cbeckmann@cityoffollybeach.com

Let him know your outrage. Surfing and surfers put a lot of money into a lot of peoples pockets.

Let us know how we can help in addition to showing up . Do the ESA and surfriders plan to attend? Are there other groups we can reach out too?

The important people are already in motion, including Bubber and Nancy.

ian,

I just read the minutes from their last meeting. From what I can discern, they want to make a "safe" swimming area. i know there must me room on that. I suspect they will try to ban surfing around that area between 2nd and 3rd, but if we show up in force I bet we can get a workable comprise. See you then

Why the hell does anyone care about surfing the pier in winter. Is there any real reason! I spend more cash there in the winter time because I surf there.

the important people are already in motion? thats a joke right?
one of em was quoted in the paper saying "I don't have a problem with a parking system at the Washout" , the other strikes fear into cigarette butts while Rome burns.
We need to ALL be there, this is just a continuation of what started with the parking at the Washout.Which, by the way ,there is a petition at Ocean Surf Shop to allow an annual fee for non-residents to park at the Washout.
(Not to imply that McKev's is not allied in the parking battle ,they are .)
Don't let others represent you, look what a wonderful job Surfrider did on the parking issue.

Some people do more than others, some do nothing at all and then complain when it doesn't go the way they wanted it to. What it comes down to is this: Do you know the people with money, because you're only entitled to as much justice as you can afford.

Okay, let's please not bitch about who did what or didn't when it comes to the damn parking fees.

At this point the issue is being able to surf the pier. It would behoove all to not point fingers at those who do or don't take action.

If you care about surf access, literal access as in where you can or can't enter the water...then you need to show your support against the proposal and attend the council meeting. It would also help to spread the word to those you know and get them to attend.

As a side note, it's going to be much more helpful to attend and have a game plan on what you will say, as oppposed to come in and simply bitch about the proposal. If you don't like public speaking, just being there in physical presence as an opponent will speak loud enough.

So let's get quit infighting as a surf community and put our energy into keeping our access status quo.

If you all lose this, then you might as well not stop and check the surf at the pier anymore, pay the parking meter, and go buy a rebel flag towel at Wings! Because this is the type of shit that happens when you don't do anything about it. It has really gone to far...

The meeting is 8:30 am Thurs Feb. 7th. You probably already know this but it bears repeating. It is early and you might have to work but please show up if possible. The more people the faster we can squash this thing. If you are a good speaker it would be great to voice your opinion, if not no sweat, just show up and be seen. It will mean alot to everyone to have a good turn out.
Thanks

I know all you other pier folk. I surf and chat with you everytime there are waves. I will be at the meeting. If you are not I will know. I am very good with faces and names. This is a threat.

If your voting "I dont surf the pier so I dont care" you need to recognize the fact that if all the longboarders cant surf the pier, they'll head on down to the washout, sit waaaaay outside, and pick off every good set wave that come's through.

Not even your 3'4" roundnose fish (the greatest surfboard ever created) will be able to stop them from taking over.

Watch out !!!!

It's not about longboard vs. shortboard, it's about not letting arbitrary restrctions be put in place. Even if you don't surf the pier, you should support those who do...in the same way longboarders would step up to help the Washout.

It's about surfing..not the lengthof your board or your favorite break. If this goes through, it'll be a dark foreshadowing of things to come.

(Kind of like ridiculously bright flourescent lights in front of an ugly green T-shirt shop....oh wait, that's for another post.)
