it's longboard time...

...time for a new log. I just ordered a 10' Bing to complement my 9'4" Bing Lovebird which has become my favorite longboard ever, and arguably the best performance noserider around. In more good news from Bing we got this email from Margaret Yao, Sales Manager for Bing Surfboards:

"Hi everyone,

Please join me in welcoming the newest member of the Bing & Jacobs glassing
team, Rich Perrier. Rich has over 30 years of glossing experience and has
glassed for Waterman's Guild, Hobie, Channin, Robert August, Brewer,
Infinity, Diffenderfer, and Plastic Fantastic to name a few. In addition to
glossing, Rich also brings with him his extensive experience in acrylic and
resin pin lines."

Well, that's quite the resume. That guy could probably polish a turd. Custom orders are 4-6 weeks so get yours in time for the summer doldrums.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Bing Surfboards made from Clark Foam which is in fact a popout from England?

I.R. said...

I think Clark Foam went out of business, but I'll have to check my sources.

oh snap!

you should start a surf forum like the surf station message board. i bet a lot of people would get on it.

No comment Ian? I take it you saw that Bing uses popouts. I still think you are a cool dude though.

"Y'All Suckers Write Me Checks And Then They Bounce So I Reach In My Pocket For The Fresh Amount See I'm The Long Leaner Vincent The Cleaner

Gardena, California is the home of Bing Surfboards, recently relocated from Hermosa Beach, California which is also the home of Pennywise.

Clark foam has been closed for 2 and hef years. Clark shoes are still made in England.

Bing fans can still share info here at http://community.livejournal.com/bingsfans/

Check it out.

i love the bing zeph's currently showing on bingsurf.com

You are right Ian. Clark Foam did close. Now Bing is partnered with Blair Foam. Matt Calvani is the shaper but now offering his shapes as popouts. So isn't that just as bad? I also found a company specializing in sugar based blanks. ice-nine foamworks. Pretty interesting. Still not custom but at least getting better for the earth.

Explain popout.

anonymous you are wrong so you are corrected

A popout surfboard is a surfboard that that was made on a production line or molded, not shaped. This is typically so that the manufacturer can have many, even thousands, of surfboards all the exact same. Just go to www.blairfoam.com/ it clearly states "Blair Foam, after its recent acquisition of Green Valley Mill, is now one of the fastest growing surfboard blank companies in the world."

By the way, I am not trying to be an ass on. I actually like their ride and style. And I like reading your Blog. Just thought it ironic that No Popouts creator rides a board which may be custom but still from a company that used and now makes blanks a.k.a. popouts.

Bing is not making Pop-Outs. Get your facts straight dumb s%*t.

So if a sculptor purchased a block of clay, the same block of clay available to the public and didn't alter that block of clay before said sculptor made a clay figurine out of it, completely altering the original block shape that the clay came in, you would consider it the same as a mass produced molded clay figurines you buy at the Dollar Store?

Or does he have to dig the clay out of the quarry himself for it to be an "authentic" handmade piece?

djjahd said...

nice analogy!!! maybe you sould just use your magical powers to make your own foam then shape it ... and only then will you have a completely authentic board....

One difference they do not come in a shapeless or square block. They come machine shaped with various dimensions. Now that is in fact A POPOUT.

Is that mill shaped blanks or am i hallucinating?!

I am showing THEIR information. Not what i think.

So to anonymous you can scream they're not popouts all you want but you have yet to prove your point.

To Ian I am not saying you can't get these blanks and tweak them for yourself and clients. I am simple saying that Bing uses Blair Foam which produces blanks.

Blanks are not pop-outs

Anonymous said...

OK. Then why doesn't someone explain to me what a popout is?!

I.R. said...

"One difference they do not come in a shapeless or square block. They come machine shaped with various dimensions. Now that is in fact A POPOUT."

The blank dimensions are standard to tell the shaper how much width and thickness they have to work with. For example, if a shaper wanted to make a 5'10" fish that was 3 5/16 thick (for a short fat guy), he couldn't use the 6'5"F blank but would have to cut it out of the 6'11"F blank that has a max thickness of 3 7/16.

And they are blown into a mold, not machine shaped. All manufactured blanks are "popped out" of molds. There, I said it. Does that make your thing wiggle? But, you can't just glass one as is, it has to be shaped.

Anonymous said...

If you would have started with that there would have been no confusion. I still think some glass the blank as is. But I am not trying to one up you. Like I said I read your blog, and honestly think you are a cool dude. Just my understanding of what I was reading blurred blanks, popouts, manufactured, molded, custom. And like I said i like the ride and style of Bing boards.

Anonymous said...

how do you know what shape size and thickness is needed for a person?

djjahd said...

so back in the days of clark foam, were all the rockers "natural" (pre rocked) or did you have to shape those yourself.

Anonymous said...

They are close tolerence blanks, not popouts, there is a huge difference. Clark made millions of these things and had thousands of molds, but you can not glass one of these and go surf. It has to be shaped. How could I know this? you ask. I have been building boards for years. I worked with thousands of clark blanks and look forward to working with blair. I maybe a professional but I am still a dick when it comes to this stuff, so get your facts straight you stupid f#@cking piece of s%&t.

Anonymous said...

anony: Go ahead and glass a blank, and see how it surfs

bob: depends on what the rider wants to ride and their physical body. bigger person = more foam volume

and djj: all blanks have rocker, no matter who the manufacturer is.

Does any one here surf?

If you have a polyurethane, or polystyrene blank which is close to what you need (without shaping modifications) you can plane off the crust (if it has a crust), lightly sand, do a few details and, you are done shaping. Anon, It is not as labor intensive as a foam block as this "professional" says it is. So you are not completely wrong in thinking it could be glassed, but little details do need to be addressed. I have shaped many boards and even molds need a little love before glass.

are any of you guys on myspace...

what is needed for someone 5'6, 129 lbs?

djjahd said...

eric... yes we surf... no all of us don't shape boards nor did we go to the college of of "i know fucking everything about surfing".
so naturaly i have questions and if i myself have an answer for someone, i'll gladly answer it. Thanks Ian and the others who post regularly, answer questions without smart remarks

djjahd said...

annony.... are you just starting to surf or do you have some experience... that will also help you decide

Anonymous said...

a couple baby waves but really no surf experience...

djjahd said...

i would say.... remember that i didn't go to shapeing school....
get something over 7 feet... the smaller your board the more squirly its be for you... also harder to catch the wave... i learned on my dads 7'2 , single fin.. no many tricks, but it was a good vessel to learn the basics.... try looking on craigslist and get something used.

I.R. said...

I love how it snowballs...

Anonymous said...

Snowball??

Isn't that a porno move between two girls?? Oh wait, I digress.

Oh...and you're wrong...foam blanks are not popouts. (two cents from me; with inflation and gas prices now equal to about $1.86)

OH and enjoy the swell that's bound to come as I have to work all weekend.

when matt shaped the silverspoon he started with a raw blank.he shaped the board rode it.he then shaped another rode it himselp and had other people ride.after several boards they got the shape right.then a cnc computer stored in info on the shape.that way you get the same great riding board every time you order a silverspoon.not gambling if it will work or not.that is what margaret told me and 90% of all shapers do that to get a consistant shape.
