surfing is a crime...

...Finn Dennis spent the night in jail last night for surfing near the pier. But it wasn't the lifeguards who ratted him out, rather an officer near the pier who saw him in the water along with another surfer. A lifeguard was sent out to get him and got handled by a set wave on his paddleboard, lost it and had to swim back to the beach to get it, finally making it back out to tell Finn to paddle in. Finn shared some nice words with the lifeguard as the lifeguard tried to block Finn from catching a wave in while insisting he paddle in, and not surf in because that would be to much fun. Finn stroked around the awkwardly paddling life-saver and caught another wave, finally going in to the beach. Upon feet touching Finn was not hoisted onto the shoulders of a cheering mob of fans and peers. Finn instead began telling the officers what a fine job they were doing and asking them if it was a job requirement to be 30 lbs overweight, reminding them there isn't even a donut shop with 8 miles of Folly Beach. His board was then ripped out his hands by 1 of several portly officers while another handcuffed him and paraded him across the swimmer-less and storm-emptied beach during which time he continued to sing the officer's praises. Finn was then escorted to jail. No, not the Mayberry-like Folly Beach jail, but the Leeds Avenue County Jail, among the most overcrowded large jails in the country running at nearly 3x its capacity. Wonder why? The other surfer was lucky enough to have his father watching from the pier, who talked the police out of taking his son also.

Check out this slide show and see where the surfer would fit in.

Fish, I mean Finn, I hope you made friends with the Squirrel Master and stayed out of Nasty Nate's way and hopefully you'll be home safe soon. If you can carry a tune, it wouldn't hurt to know this one. It might get you out of a jam...

WHAT THE FARK!!!!!! This might be the most ridiculous shart that i have every heard of.... Empty beach, stormy weather and dude gets FARKIN arrested!!!! what a bunch of a**holes your folly beach police are... those dudes sure have a bad wrap... and well deserved... whats the name of the cop who got a write up in the City Paper for being a douche bag ??? they are all from the same litter of piggies.... i'll be shakeing my head for the rest of the day knowing that surfing can get you arrested and put in the same jail as rapeist and drunk drivers.... how fluffed up is that!!!!

Folly city has taken advantage of the lack of a cohesive response from the surfing community. The city of folly would rather listen to Benedict Arnold surfers who live on folly that happen to agree with their views on restricting surfing thru parking ,lifeguards and whatever is next. All the "established surf groups" are awfully quiet ,which raises another set of red flags. At any rate ,it seems like there is a war on surfing on Folly Beach and we ain't winning!

Anonymous said...

Maybe we need to have a special surfing contest somewhere other than FB with a large entry fee. Use the funds to hire an attorney and fight the city of Folly. After all we are tax paying citizens too. And come on...getting put into a county jail with real criminals for surfing!!!! Why not a fine and a warning? Just in case the asshole cops that arrested this guy are reading this...FUCK YOU, you uneducated, redneck, inbreed nazi. I only wish that someday you are caught in a rip current and drown in a screaming panic in front of a hundred surfers!

Anonymous said...

The real question is what did he actually bet charged with? You don't go to Leeds for surfing. There's obviously more to the story.

However, he probably shouldn't have gone. I'v noticed that the newer, portly, officers of the law are complete morons, with no actual skills in handling situations or people. Face it, FB gets the dregs of the LE crop. They pay crap, so they get crap as far as new, inexperienced officers go. Add to that Terry Boatwright and there's your new, not so kind, not so friendly FB Public Safety. Too bad Boatwright didn't win the primary for Dorchester County Sheriff. Now we're stuck with him and his band of fat ass officers.

So where do we go from here? Im thinking a bonfire on the beach in front of the Holiday Inn using wood donated from the Folly Beach Lifegaurd stands. Somebody bring the gasoline.

Anonymous said...

This is getting out of hand. I wouldnt think there have been enough incidents of surfers being too close to the pier to warrant such an excessive use of power. Even if our brother in arms got mouthy a $250 dollar fine would have shut him up pretty quick while also setting a novel example.
Arresting a young man for such BS is in itself just that, BS. Im down for some well planned retaliation.

Gas prices are rising, Americans cant travel abroad because other countries hate our government, the Australians wont let us live there cause were so f*ed up, The war in Iraq is dragging, Weve got a prescription drug problem, I havent been laid in months, Prices are rising while wages remain the same, and a young surfer gets arrested for surfing too close to the pier.

The end is near.

Anonymous said...

so why didn't the other guys dad try to talk the cops out of taking him too?

Anonymous said...

I heard the story and talked to those who were there. The other boy's father did try to talk the PIG Cop out of taking Finn to the slammer. But Finn got out of the water before his friend and got grabbed as soon as his feet hit the sand. The Dad just managed to keep his own kid from being cuffed like a common felon. There were other surfers in the water as well, but they singled out the two youngest guys out there. Actually, by the time the two were aware that they were getting whistled at, they began paddling several hundred yards toward the NE, well away from the pier. They thought that was all that was wrong...not that they were creating a major crime wave. And no, Finn didn't do or say anything disrespectful until he probably was in the car. Honestly...this country is going to hell..."Home of the free"??? Bullshit. I've lived abroad and this is the most controlled society I've ever seen outside of a Communist state. And the "South" is the most backwards, uneducated inbreed bunch of morons on the planet...and Souf Caroliny is led by idiots dating back to the days of the civil war...oh yeah, they started it. Folly Beach is the pimple on the buttock of the world.

I.R. said...

Nobody has heard from Finn yet, so charges are all speculative. I'll say they charged him with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, which will get you to Leeds. The fines are the least of his worries at this point.

I only have this to say.... Delta is ready when yall are.

There are plenty of other surf towns in the good ole USA that have free parking and no rules.... other than the "surfers rule", where spoiled young punks can do what ever they want without concern of repercussions...just like living with hippie mommy and daddy who were always too smoked up to dicipline their kids..

I suggest packing your belongings and leave Folly Beach now, never to return. Good-Bye, good riddance, adoo adoo, see ya later.

Don't let the old delapidated squeeky redneck screen door hit you in the ass on your way out.

Man what a buncha cry babies. It's not real hard to follow rules, is all I'm saying. The law is clearly posted and rehashed over and over and over, yet some people still don't get it. 200 feet is not that far, really it's not yet people still ignore it. I would think there is more to the story about why this guy got taken to the slammer, not just some "the man keeping us down" type conspiracy theory.

Funny thing, how just because I'm a law abiding, respectful citizen who think folks should obey the law that bad mouth the south and Charleston in general should just leave the area instead of complaining... lets see....I'm a

"anti surfing grumpy hick".... lol, No, I'm an anti dick grumpy hick

"grumpy dickwad ,just call him a kook.Tell him tell him the civil war is over" ...So, what does the civil war in 1862 have to do with respecting the law in 2008?

"some ultra right wing fanatic"... Once again, those law abiding people are real wackos

"what makes you so mean? Have another piece of fried chicken with your big mac, wash it down with a twelve pack of bud and go have a coronary. B.T.W. is your nickname Bubba" ... I love fried chicken... once again though, I don't get all ignorant southern redneck connotations yall throw out there just because I don't cry over parking meters at the washout or summer restriction near the pier.

If it's so horrible just leave...oh yea I forgot, my favourite quote of the day....
"I make way too much money to move, besides ,I think it'll be my call ,not yours"

OK fair enough and you a free to feel that way... but if you type this out on Ians or any other blog I see, I'll feel free to ask you why don't you move, even if it's a "Delta is ready when you are"....my god, a communist state...

"Bullshit. Folly Beach is the pimple on the buttock of the world."

Well it's my home and has been for years, so go back "abroad" and stick it. What's more ass backerds, the souf* itself or someone who stays in this assbackerds place whining about it being assbackerds?

One last thing and yall can go back to hating..it's an over used cliche' I know but...if ya can't do the time, don't do the crime.

Anonymous said...

"if ya can't do the time, don't do the crime"

What crime? How can someone own the ocean?

Anonymous said...

I think grumpy local is one of Folly Beach's finist. And no...surfing is not a crime and should never be treated as such. Also, it is guys (or maybe it is a girl) like grumpy that take the fun out of surfing...just to bad.

Anonymous said...

What crime?

Surfing too close to the pier, is what started it. Pretty simple and straight forward regulation... not sure what part of that reality yall don't understand.

We'll have to wait to hear what actually got the dude thrown in the clink.

This still irks me a little...."I've lived abroad and this is the most controlled society I've ever seen outside of a Communist state. And the "South" is the most backwards, uneducated inbreed bunch of morons on the planet...and Souf Caroliny is led by idiots dating back to the days of the civil war...oh yeah, they started it. Folly Beach is the pimple on the buttock of the world."

It's "inbred", not "inbreed", dummy. Can't imagine living "abroad" and not seeing places more inbreed* than Charleston..I've lived abroad too and whoa, 3rd world is way different than Charleston.

Anonymous said...

and this is absolutely pathetic from all angles....

"I think grumpy local is one of Folly Beach's finist. And no...surfing is not a crime and should never be treated as such. Also, it is guys (or maybe it is a girl) like grumpy that take the fun out of surfing...just to bad."

10 miles of beach, 400 feet of which is restricted... that people can't or won't stay out of and I'm taking the fun out of all of surfing by thinking we should adhere to the rules... 400 feet out of ten miles... lol..bad guy.

What time and where, I want to be there?

Anonymous said...

Yeah Finn...we're behind you brah! On another note, wow...I've been following this blog and grumpy local sure has a lot of issues. Sounds like what they call in cities a "condo comando". There was no one on the beach, in the water nor fishermen on the pier at the time of this horrific criminal act. I agree, if there are people swimming or fishing etc. then yeah, follow the rules. But come on, why pick a fight with a kid who just wants to enjoy a few waves on such a misserable stormy afternoon. He was surfing, not selling drugs. If it was in the middle of a sunny Saturday afternoon with families swimming...yes, enforce the law within reason. Another concern I have is if you read the city codes on beach rules, why are Wave Runners allowed to operate within these protected swimming areas? Sounds like double standards to me.

hey miserable redneck, you forgot to rehash the spoiled hippie angle in your last rehash , you know, the parents on drugs, long hair ,damn woodstock!

I've been following this blog too. I don't see what the big deal is about what grumpy local is saying. Obeying the rules is for dumb rednecks? OK

I'm not from South Carolina but I love it here and am glad to be here, even if the surf isn't as good. I don't understand the mentality of people who constantly complain about it being a backwards redneck shithole but continue to live here.

I think some people thrive on complaining.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said... Sounds like the last gasp of the bushies.

Meaning Bush supporters are positive about their surroundings while following written laws and Obama Kerry Edwards supporters complain constantly about the man keeping them down while ignoring laws based on a sense of entitlement?

Good god you people are wacked, I've reread this whole blog and still don't understand where all the hate is coming from...all based on the "Delta is ready when you are" comment to the anon.

I'm not the one who took the kid to jail and while I feel for him, I still say the law is simple and obvious. I've surfed the pier regular since it was rebuilt in 95 and I've never been ticketed or taken to jail..coincidence or intelligence?

Anon with a stick up your ass and the disdain for Souf Caroliny, you sound like the one with issues Bro. You asked why I don't move... lol, I'm not the one whining about the south now am I. I like it here and really don't mind the compromise involving surfing the pier. So where did you live "abroad".... a winter snowboarding in Vail does not count.

Anonymous said...

I've now reread the whole damn list of comments.

EVERYONE is missing the point here.

I'm sure Finn will enlighten us as to what the charge was that got him to Leeds, but THAT is the point. He was arrested and taken to Leeds for what I will bet was not just for surfing too close to the pier.

The rest of the comments are getting ridiculous.

There's a code to not surf near the pier. It's that simple. Should the cop have enforced it on a crappy rainy day??? Unfortunately, his call. So there you go. It goes back to the lack of people skills and common sense of most of the FB public safety officers. BUT, it's his duty and right to enforce it.

As for all of you who post anonymously taking shots at someone who is Southern and making a bunch of derogatory comments on southerners and the state YOU choose to live in.....it just reflects poorly on you when others read it.

Is grumpy right or wrong? Who cares, but taking what could amount to the equivalent of racist remarks (change everything to skin color or heritage and your comments are right there) is just ridiculous......ESPECIALLY when you don't have the cajones to post even a fake name so that the rest of us can separate the comments from one another.

So how about we just drop the crap and put this one to bed until we can here the rest of the story???

Thre preceding viewpoint is sure to be pissed upon, but keep in mind it came from a transplant and not a southerner.....so feel free to make snide remarks about other parts of the USA (one hint though, I do not hail from Ohio)

Peace out. (sorry grumpy, had to get a little hippy on you)

Great post old kook. I'm more of a hippie than you'll ever imagine... sat around drum circles, chanting, smoking and later did some tantra with hairy legged, crystal carrying chick who smelled bad.

I used to work with a guy who happened to be an ultra liberal from the North East who constantly berated any and everything about the South... I used to ask him the same question...if you hate it here so much why don't you move..which just led to more whining, excuses and derogatory comments about my ancesteral family, etc.... Sorry, people like that get under my skin.... Just STFU already or leave.

As much as I love the pier, I've surfed here so long and have almost gotten in trouble numerous times that I know better than to chance the rules. Particularly now that Folly's a different place. Wow...everyone is either ultra right or ultra left. No wonder the rest of the world hates Americans. I don't even like myself for being one sometimes. "Can't we all just get along?" BTW, I was born in Charleston, professional and got an education. Studing some of the local laws and ordinances I see lots of faults in them. But the law is the law, if they are so disliked by so many, I suggest that those who oppose said laws organize and fight fire with fire. My personal feelings are that the local police are underpaid and not exactly the cream of the crop when it came time for hiring. They too are humans and historically people in power tend to abuse such power. They have very little tolerace for anyone else's opinion other than their own. Example, how many of you have seen off duty police speeding well over the limit? I have had several neighbors that are cops and I've seen them break local city codes and get away with it because they have a badge. Not saying all police are bad, I've had a few close friends that are cops and even they have been breaking the law even while still in uniform (i.e. drinking and driving, off duty of course) In my humble opinion, there was a young guy surfing in conditions that seemed okay to him, an hour or two before the restriction was to be lifted. No one around, I would have probably gone surfing too if I'd have been there. All of a sudden there are blue flashing lights and armed people on the beach. Being young and not the best judge of the appropriate action...he probably got a bit afraid and didn't want to come in. After all the police in this country don't have the best reputation. Check out You Tube, there is a cop in Baltimore choking a 13 or 14 year old for skateboarding. Said cop lost his job and more, it was caught on video. There are other videos on You Tube that are similar. Bottom line...young people and police don't like each other. Surfers have a free spirit and it kinda of goes with the territory. If any of you have surfed since the seventies, remember back when surfers were being arrested for surfing at Tressiles because Preident Nixon had a house near there or something like that. I think that everyone over reacted, the surfer...well just a dumb kid. But the cops souldn't have made a mountain out of a sand dune! Also, over development of Folly hasn't helped much either. Too many people, not enough beach.

Anonymous said...

Anyone every feel your heart race a little faster everytime you see a cop in your rear view or even going in the opposite direction, do you find yourself checking your mirrors? I always thought I should feel safe and unafraid when they are around. Somehow that seems to be not the case. And I'm the most law following person you'd every meet. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think that all police in England even carry a gun...and their crime rate isn't as high as the good ol US of A. He was just surfing brah.

Anonymous said...

Just a thought here...all you bloggers that are against this kid who got arrested, especially "grumpy", let me ask you this. Be honest...have you ever broken a law? Are you perfect? Every smoke some weed, or have a beer when you were under aged? I'm sure at some point you've gotten at least a speeding ticket and at the very least, in your mind you were swearing at the cop that wrote you up and thinking how unfair he is being to you. Yeah, I thought so. Give the surfer kid a break and stand by your fellow surfer.

Lol, thats called, "having your cake and eating it too" which is Anons MO.

Good idea anon about the surfing pier, except they charge those fishermen money to fish off it and to park in the lot. It's a good chunk of change. I can only imagine the cry baby diatribe if Anon had to pay to paddle out...

To answers crabs question.... I'm not against the surfer in question per say, however it is not smart to tell a cop to fuck off, fuck himself, fuck a dog or anything like that. Earlier in the spring there was talk of banning surfing around the pier totally. Surfrider foundation, (yes Anon, they were there, where were you?)worked hard through discussions with council members to ensure this would not happen. However the issue of surfers parking in the Holiday Inn lot, using private showers and causing trouble with anglers who pay to utilize a county park was brought up as a valid case.
I love to surf the pier, been a regular since they rebuilt in 95 and the way I see it, those handful of "surferdudes" who create controversy with cops, lifeguards and park employees are jepordizing the break for all of us. The summer time compromise is not a big deal, 200 feet is not that far to stay off the pier... the first month and a half of the time restriction we saw surf no larger than 2 feet... now we have 2 1/2 months to go and it's back to normal... give a little to get a little.. not take it all, all the time.

Dealing with cops is like dealing with a wife.... yes sir, no sir, I'm sorry sir, you are correct sir, any thing you say sir, thank you sir.... and noone gets beat down.
