the janitor...

...while everyone else was sitting on the behinds watching college basketball...

...Richard decided it was time to clean up the filthy pier of Folly Beach...

...so he made himself a special garbage truck board to sweep up the lineup...

...Andrew said "He missed a spot" but its OK because it was his first time sweeping the lineup...

...and he's got a lot of ground to cover on his way over to France. Godspeed Richard!

*side note: its pretty cool to see the only 2 guys surfing the pier on boards they made themselves. Always for love, never for money. Well this is the last post for week as I am heading down to Nicaragua this week to find some tp for my bunghole. I'm leaving plenty of surf behind to help you pass the time, so get out there and enjoy yourselves. Between sessions I'd like everyone to watch the 1st 2 seasons of the canceled tv show Arrested Development so we have something to talk about when I get back. Love ya.

ding...ding...

...Slater won his 3rd Bell yesterday joining the club of 3x plus winners of the Bells Beach contest including Sunny Garcia, Mark Richards and Michael Peterson. There is still a long way to go, but with Slater winning the first 2 contests of the year, it looks like the East Coast is gonna take back the WCT title from the Australians greasy mitts and into the hands of America, F*** Yeah!

More photos at the contest site here.

...here's one of the new Sharp Eye SBT quads. These these things go so fast in slop I actually burned my eyebrows off one day riding Osmental's. And I have some serious eyebrows...

Nicaragua? Agua! AGUA FOR MY BUNGHOLE!!!

...are you threatening me?

Has anyone been to or have any info on Nicaragua? I'm heading down next Monday and wanted to see if anyone has some nuggets of info. Thanks.

last week's storm...

...taken from my front porch on Folly during the 3/15 storm system that gave us some little waves a couple days later. Volume makes it mo better.

...be the envy of everyone on the beach this summer with a Todd Sutz longboard.

sticky homegrown...

...did you make the cut? Did Shawn Ducker or Rick Anson do a reverse in your face? Did Osmental ride a knee high wave to the beach and do 20 turns on it? I guess the only way to find out is to be at the American Theatre on Thursday at 6:30 and 8:30 with $7, cash money, no plastic.

epoxy is only worth it...

...if you are making your own blanks, in your own backyard and for super cheap, so I've been told, at least. Greg Loehr would tell you different, but I'm not sure why.

he got a woody...

...looking airbrush on his custom Will Allison thruster. Will's cult-like following continues to make him the go-to-guy for customs around here. Alan Weisbecker of In Search of Captain Zero fame is a loyal Allison rider also. Will dropped of a fresh new shipment yesterday with some GT Quads and his new wing-pin design. Looking tight.

2 post Tuesday...

...how about 30 new wave slappers, including a Gullwing? Yup.

Wha' happen???

...this was a BRAND NEW NEVER IN THE WATER CI BISCUIT! until something went horribly wrong. Let's hear your scenario of what went down causing this devastating blow to some unknown Folly Beach resident's ego, and quiver. Pound some coffee, get creative and post it. Prize to the winner.

brand loyalty...

...after years in the shop I've seen lots of surf brand tattoos. One guy had a whole bunch of logos like Rusty's R., a couple Volcom Stones, Dragon Optical and whatever else, all prison style on his arm. Pretty sweet. Neck tats are kinda hard core just because they don't cover up easily. This guy is a fan of ...Lost obviously, and he backed it up by spending over $300 on ...Lost clothing when he was in the shop. Down for life, and the receipts to prove it!

This on the other hand has not been confirmed as a fan of ...Lost leaving me to speculate whether they're a fan of the television show or just plain clueless.

the meeting...

...as soon as I saw this bumper sticker I rubbed some peppermint salve on my upper lip to cancel out the forseen smell of dirty hippie in the auditorium...

...existing WalMart overhead, left square would be new 4-football field total area in size built over wetlands they agreed to preserve, in their city contract, for the life of their occupation of the area. The red area on the right would be a strip mall to block the view of the mongo parking lot.

Check out the proceedings at http://www.isrex.org/ and make your voice heard regardless if you are for or against it.

what does this handlebar mustache have to do with surfing???

...everything. Another ...Lost round nose fish ready for the lineup at the mercy of the GCB (Garden City Bomber) If you see this stache coming down the line you're about to be in a world of hurt, so you might as well grab the handle bars and go along for the ride. Giddyup!

this Tuesday @ 6:30, be there...

...my fellow American's, you've been wondering how you can prevent the rapid changes happening on James Island and Folly Beach. Well, it all starts by showing up to meet with
the newly formed Islanders for Responsible Expansion group. They will hold a public meeting to discuss the Wal-Mart Supercenter project at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Department of Natural Resources auditorium at 217 Fort Johnson Road.

If you are unaware of what's going on with the proposed Wal*Mart Supercenter, check here and here and... here. Just gonna cut down some trees and build on some wetlands. No biggie.

there's a mighty wind a' blowin'...

...it's the Wha' happened? swell. After the Wha' happened? surf session was cancelled due to what Variety called a "complete lack of interest," Riggs took his act to the surf shop circuit, where he met a member of the folk group The Center Street Singers...

it's all about the elements...

...we're going to get another sizable swell this weekend, but again the conditions may never quite come together. Tuesday I got to break out my 6'2" step-up for the first time, which is also Shane Beschen's old board shaped by Eric Arakawa. It went great on some of those 5-6 footers during the early afternoon before the wind went nutty.

The swell will definitely be there tonight and tomorrow, just watch the wind for the best window. Good luck, and leave the longboard at home.

best of the best...

...thank you for voting us the Best Surf Shop for the last 11 years straight. I finally got to go to the Best Of Charleston party to see what all the hoopla is about. Well, the best restaurants supplied the food for free and the beer flowed like wine.

...this girl had a few too many of Pearlz' imported shrimp. I only had 3 and I'm feeling this way today, except I'm wearing more than underwear as a safety precaution. Imported shrimp at the best of Charleston? Slap in the face. Cru's Catering had the real deal local pealed shrimp. Yeah.

At least Kaminski's, which has the same owners as Pearlz, had the shizzle dessert. How good was it? Well, it rode on the windshield from downtown to Folly Beach and it was still edible upon arrival. That's the true test of quality foodstuffs.

Even the blog won an award: Best Way to Wait Out the Doldrums Between Swells on Folly Beach
McKevlin's Blog
Ian Riggs is a surfer. Actually he's a skater who surfs, but that clarification was the source of one of the daily retorts and heated conversations that spice up his already hilarious posts from McKevlin's headquarters on Folly Beach. Staunchly anti-"pop-out" (boards shaped and created by machines rather than by hand), Riggs doesn't hesitate to call out the other stores in town that carry them, and he's equally quick to poke fun at some surfers' overzealous affiliation to particular breaks like the Washout. Although his comments generate some angry banter, they're all in good fun, and the underlying theme is to encourage and help people to pursue the sport. And if you come into the store wearing way-too-short shorts or have a ridiculous looking wipeout, and Riggs is around with his camera, watch out — he'll post it, and we'll all have a good laugh. With you, of course.

as fin turn says what???

...some new FCS templates just arrived in the shop. From left to right:
1. TC Redline Redux - Super stiff power surfing fins.
2. TC Aqua Line - Features 2 different gauge honeycomb insets for a stiff base with flex at the tip.
3. Simon Anderson Honeycomb - (Inaccurately) credited for the 3-fin surfboard, check here.
4. JS-1 - Rides nice like the JS surfboard, but unlike the JS surfboard, it won't buckle or have the nose broken off.
5. AM-2 Honeycomb -Classic template scaled down for the medium to smaller surfer.
6. OCCY - No details needed, if you don't know by now...

welcome to Myrtle Beach...

...you slept on the parking meters, and then you slept on the Design Review Board passing up 2 decent looking facades for these atrocities...

...it's fricken lime green. How did the building owner let them paint a nice, natural brick building lime fricken green? How did the Design Review Board pass that? When is the water slide going to be finished? And the arcade, and putt putt? Well, I'm going to "cruise the strip" before they put some ordinance into effect.
