It's Human Rights Day...

...so don't forget to buy something "Made in China" today, and I'll see you at Tiananmen Square around noon for our protest...

Here's cheers to more people, like Sunny above, who could make money saving the environment or whatever with their engineering degrees, and are instead outsourcing surfboard manufacturing to China. Looky here...

...and here.

Sweeeeet. I just ordered a full quiver from their website!!! I'll see you in the water, shredding!!!

Mahalo!! (I'd say something in chinese about how stoked I am, but I haven't collected enough fortunes from my local chinese restaraunt, with the learn to speak chinese words on it, to get my vocabulary that big....but, I'm working on it for my attack on the world with my chinese globalization connections).

See you in the water dudes! (With my Harvey Mudd degree in hand).

official thread jump-if you pay to park atthe washout you are the problem .fight back. do NOT put $$ in the meters.put in wax, resin ,anything else .fight back . The local ESA is for the pay parking -fuck em -fight back.
Who says people coming over to the beach don't pay their "fair share".Fight back . Does anyone think we would have 10 restaurants, surf shops ,liquor store ,gas station(usually filled with cars with boards),or any of the businesses Folly has without "visitors".People who come to the beach do support local business even more so than Folly resident do because theres simply more of us more of us .fight back .were surfers not a friggin herd of cows.

Ok - your problems will be solved! I'm making a Holiday Trip to the Low Country for Christmas and will personally destroy all parking meters.

That's why you flock to the washout for a closeout beachbreak and pay to surf when there is miles of beach with closed out beachbreak and free parking....Yea.

good grief!

Like most people ,I surf where I want to.The washout has always been free .surfin should be free and I urge anyone grumpy to take off ,surf wherever you want, not the issue. The issue is the politicians on folly have deemed that people who "come over" don't pay their fair share .
Bullshit .
We pay more .
You think there would be 10 restaurants ,two surf shops ,liquor store and way too many realtors if people didn't come over here?
If the businesses on folly spoke up for surfing those meters would be gone the next day ,like years ago when they tried it on Center st.
Its not fair to make these mostly young people without much moneypay $1an hour to surf ,thats too much tax.
Lastly ,if you never surf the washout, this doesn't effect you .You don't have a dog in this fight.Truth is ,its all closed out at the washout ,don't surf there. This issue effects all of us that like crowded closeouts.

this same parking company has a lot behind wild wings downtown where I have parked for years. You put 7$ in the slot. After work a few weeks aqo I came out to my car and there was a boot on it!
I was so pissed! They said I only put in 5$ and I would have to give them $35 to take off the boot.I swore I put in $7 and had a witness in fact, but no dice .Only after I'd been to small claims court that they returned my phone calls and came to my work and brought me $35 in cash.

Mooooooooooooo.....

Yea, those "poor" "poor" young kids who have vehicles nicer than I will ever want or need, and thousands of dollars worth of the latest surf garb, boards and wet suits... 3 dollars to park and smash the dunes cause they're too lazy to use the boardwalks.... my god, somebody call the whaaaaaaambulance.

Anonymous said...

sounds like the waa waa is you.its hard to figure why anyone who surfs the washout would be FOR pay parking.either you don't surf or you dont surf the washout, hence this aint your issue ,you just like to bitch ,or waaaah waaah as you say.Not only are you not on the surfers side ,sounds like your type of thinking is what led to the $1per hour. Its serves as a reminder that we do have opponents to free surfing, people who wanna milk the surfers for $ then take us to task for not liking it.Assholes walk amongst us.

Interesting that you can call someone an asshole and say he walks among us and remain anonymous.

Paying for parking sucks, but for now it's a reality. Bashing someone who's willing to throw a couple of bucks in the meter isn't going to cure the problem.

But, in light of the original topic, you could go get a 9:Fish and save some cash for the meter!! Wait, I hear Costco's got a great deal on boards for christmas, then you could save for a house on the sand!!!

Merry Christmas.

Because I live here and have a sticker doofus... and really don't much like people to begin with, much less the new crop of "humans" who seem to still be suckling their momas titty and think the world revolves around them.... you know the ones...they look, see you taking off but drop in anyway... look again, could kick out but don't, because they don't care about another person...only themselves.... I hope they go to IOP and park for free... hey that rhymes. nln

Anonymous said...

funny ,you want the washout for just yourself and screw everyone because you live on Folly .
Selfishness defined.I feel sorry for you.
When you blame your (surfing)problems on everyone else ,you are dependent on those others to solve your problem ,and they're not going to be there for you .
One more thing ,how much should we charge you to go to James Island?(Sorree no stickee for you!)

Anonymous said...

Nah I could care less about surfing the washout. It is a lame medocre crowded wave at best, especially when compared to other surf locals abroad... speaking of which, have you ever been abroad? Do you think Folly is the only beach in the world with pay parking?

Not to mention it's only from 10 to 6 you have to pay to park...or you could park down the street and walk 1 or 2 blocks (the horror).. little timmy titty sucker has to put a little effort into his surf trip...

Speaking of too lazy to walk a few blocks, tell me why noone uses the boardwalks? 90% of the surfers at the washout walk over the dunes. Why do you think that is.. respect issues?

And why should my tax dollars pay the garbage men to work every Sat and Sun emptying trash cans full of crap created by non residents?

this is whack... "When you blame your (surfing)problems on everyone else ,you are dependent on those others to solve your problem ,and they're not going to be there for you."...Hey Frued, you mean problems like parking meters?
And they don't charge you to come over to Folly as they wont charge me to go to James Island.. (put down the pipe dude).

Anonymous said...

hey grumpy ,I think anonymous just chewed you to shreds

Anonymous said...

lets see, um ,doesn't surf the washout ,but wants everybody that surfs to pay to surf there ,I'm gonna look that up ,yep here it is ,it says you must be a -whoa -won't repeat it here.Dang .
Yeah ,gotta have those trash cans emptied ,I reckon you think $1 per person per hour oughta do it ?

Also the businesses that pay taxes wouldn't be here without vistors ,those businesses not only more than pay for trash ,they also help give Folly lower taxes than the surrounding areas .If all the locals boycott the businesses ,they will lose $,which means less tax money.
And don't forget all the $ that paves the state road comes from state citizen pocketbooks. And then theres the renourishment ,so don't even give me that penny ante crap about garbage cans, there just trying to use that as an excuse.I'll tell you what,we'll pay for the garbage can ,you pay for you own beach renourishment.
One more thing ,its even sleazier during the winter months, when its pretty quiet except for local surfers. Then around 10;15 ,(only if theres waves, funny),the fat guy in the quad comes passing out $25 tickets and the early crew has to leave the water. But then again ,that probably pleases you ,since you profess to not like people.Hey for people like you ,this is probably great. But for the rest of us it sucks.Thats my opinion and thats what this space is for and I appreciate your keeping it going ,this issue needs traction ,the surfers I've talked to ,and not just the washout ,are 100% against it ,we just need to get to work getting the meters removed.

Anonymous said...

Maybe you missed these questions so I'll ask again.

Do you think Folly is the only beach beach town in America with parking meters?

Why won't people use the boardwalks instead of trampling across the dunes, bypassing signs that say, "Keep Off The Dunes"?

What is so horrible about having to walk a block after parking for free to surf?

This is good..... "Then around 10;15 ,(only if theres waves, funny),the fat guy in the quad comes passing out $25 tickets and the early crew has to leave the water"... The early crew starts at first light...around 6:20 am... you had almost 4 hours of free parking... do you stay out in the water for 5 and 6 hours at a time?

(only if theres waves, funny)... I think it's you who is there only when there's waves.... to use the beach.

pay parking elsewhere? I quote a popular bumper sticker-We don't care how you did it up north .Why don't you answer MY questions? Instead you keep changing the subject -the last bastion of the failed argument- you'll probably go after my anonymity next.
Walk a block to surf? Its funny ,selfish locals who don't w ant anyone parking on state land in front of their homes/mcmansion/hotel may become surfers allies on this issue.
I've often wondered why people who don't like surfers ,as you admit ,even bother to live at the beach. Probably why your grumpy.Just think of all the places you could go raise taxes.
Anyway ,as much as I enjoy winning arguments, this is redundant since its obvious theres no response to all the money visitors pour into Folly.Just ask Tim ,Bill ,Taco Boy the Kangaroo/subway,etc,etc,etc,where they get the money for their taxes from .You just want surfers to pick pick up some of the property tax bill ,which is already much lower on Folly than surrounding areas.(Because of the relatively large portion of taxes ,for such a small town ,paid for by businesses funded by visitors.)
You can ignore my point, change the subject, but apparently you cant give a decent argument.
Why park two blocks away, when theres a place to pull over right there, just get rid of the meters.
Again ,thanks for the responses, good luck with your sand dune issue and sorry everyone at the washout cuts you off.

anonymous said... "Why don't you answer MY questions? Instead you keep changing the subject -the last bastion of the failed argument- you'll probably go after my anonymity next."

You only asked me 3 questions throughout the whole thread, dude...

"You think there would be 10 restaurants ,two surf shops ,liquor store and way too many realtors if people didn't come over here?"... You mean people or surfers??? of course if "noone" ever came to Folly to live, play or eat...then no, if noone came noone would be here..kinda obvious..without surfers (aint gonna happen)but yes, the bussineses would still be here.. noticed the condos lately? next

"One more thing ,how much should we charge you to go to James Island?".. I answered this one, even though it makes no sense..

"you think $1 per person per hour oughta do it?".. well it's one dollar per hour per vehicle, not per person, so again your question has no merit.

"pay parking elsewhere? I quote a popular bumper sticker-We don't care how you did it up north."... the old North vs South arguement eh... another ptiful reach.... gulf and west coasts? And I usually equte that bumper sticker with a high school drop out, sister fornicator... good one!

Lets look at this quote of yours.... "Also the businesses that pay taxes wouldn't be here without vistors ,those businesses not only more than pay for trash ,they also help give Folly lower taxes than the surrounding areas .If all the locals boycott the businesses ,they will lose $,which means less tax money."

Funny you used the word, "here" to describe Folly. Were you writing from a laptop in your car at the beach, or do you work at a local surf shop, hehe? Why would "locals" boycott the businesses, we don't have to pay to park, remember... your boycott will cripple Folly like the NAACP boycott has crippled South Carolina.

Here's another doozy quote.... "Anyway ,as much as I enjoy winning arguments, this is redundant since its obvious theres no response to all the money visitors pour into Folly"... you mean those same poor young surfers you mentioned earlier in the thread, who can't afford the 3 dollars to park, yet they are gonna "pour money" into our local economy.....Mmmmhummmm....

Pat yourself on the back anonymous and tell yourself you won, you are a hero...but the meters will still be there next time you mindlessly follow the rest of the herd to the Washout.... Mooooooooooo

Anonymous said...

lets see, we pay for your renourishment ,we pay for your federally funded flood insurance ,we pay for the state road you ride home on,and pay sales taxes and support business taxes to keep your taxes the lowest in the area and you come on and complain about surfers filling trash cans ? Geez ,your ol lady better be careful somebody gonna steal you away.Anyway all your new points have already been refuted above .Cept that we're not "local"because we don't live in the city of Folly Beach,,which I won't dignify with a response. The part about the "noone "doesn't make sense, and if folly residents don't like condos ,they certainly have no one to blame but themselves.
You just want us to pay your taxes for you (without representation of course.)As if were not carrying y'all already.
Oh ,I forgot ,the cliche about up North was a worn out reference.Geez, your tough .Ok,ok , we should have pay parking then? Bit of a stretch? Its seems like your trying too hard to argue with me instead of arguing the issue.
And you put down the local kids like they're venemous, damn ,and they're the one paying the most.
I assume your ready to pay for the next renourishment.

You know, I started this thread off. With some cynical humor, to only see it become a tedious argument over pay parking and who's abusing the beach.

It's getting old.

However, there is one point, I have that will land on the side of grumpy local.

I live here, I have people park next to my house all the time, no big deal. I would (and did) too. But, these people, who do come with surfboards....the "poor" kids who can't afford to "help me with my taxes", leave so much f^^^ing trash, it's not funny. I surf...they surf....but, god damn, I don't trash the beach or the environment. I pick my crap up, whether I'm at beach or camping or in someone else's neighborhood. Are some of these people non-surfers? You bet. But, I keep constantly seeing "Bro's" with boards littering....lest we forget Ian's favorite example...the cigarette smoking ass who takes a puff then flicks the butt before going into the surf.

My point? Folly is for everyone.....but obviously if you drove and parked (for the most part) you came from off island. Well guess what? I don't come to your neighborhood and leave my Taco Bell wrappers or Subway bags on your property or your backyard.

These are the SAME people who do trample the dunes instead of using the boardwalk. These ARE the same people who don't use the trash cans, that apparently the parking money is going for based on the theories above. These ARE the same people who are bitching about paying for being close to the sand....but, who don't pick up after themselves. In turn let the pay parking stand, so that way we can help pay a little overtime to the guys who do pick up after their sorry asses.

Don't like pay parking, fine, park where it's free, locals don't care....UNLESS YOU TRASH THE BEACH WE ALL SHARE AND MY YARD THAT BELONGS TO ME.

Stop bitching about the pay parking on here and just go to a council meeting and be heard, or start a legitimate petition....either way, realize that posting on here and whining isn't going to cure anything, getting involved and actually doing something besides flaming people on a blog, that's going to change things....MMMOOOOOOOOOOO.

local;someone who ,when they travel ,say they are from charleston.
non local; someone from Atlanta who buys a builds a mcmansion on folly as a hotel investment. Then depends on others to protect it.
I don't know any surfers who litter, and would certainly call down anyone who did.Enforce the littering laws.
It sounds like you don't surf the washout,or when you did you got cut off by kooks, but for those of us who do it becomes a pocketbook issue.Of course I walk ,but that doesn't make sense ,I've been parking right there for decades.Bleed the money from somewhere else.
All I know are the regular year round local surfers paying tons more than their share, and still having a hard time avoiding tickets. These are the people you refer to as whiny little rich kids or whatever with plenty of $ for meters ,but oddly,no money for area businesses.
As far as people driving over from James Island, well too bad ,when you're living in heaven ,someone always knocking at the gate.If not for feeding at the public trough, soaking up everyones tax $$, most the selfish folly people wouldn't be living there either.
I agree that a petition is a good idea.I've heard of other "suggestions" too that are interesting.

Anonymous said...

You pay alot yet still have a hard time avoiding tickets?

Here is a clue (already stated above)..between 10 and 6 the gravel lots at all blocks and the strecth of East Ashley known as "the washout", is pay parking.

Hope this helps yall avoid further tickets.

And make sure to buy a hot dog from Berts on your way off the island so that our economic livelyhood doesn't erode and crumble before our very eyes.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous: "It sounds like you don't surf the washout,or when you did you got cut off by kooks, but for those of us who do it becomes a pocketbook issue"

So apparently you're only concerned about thw washout?? It's all you keep referring to. You do realize that the waves exist outside the washout. And how do you even know if I do or don't surf the washout? Or, that someone cut me off?? Guess what, people drop in at 10th, the pier...it's a part of surfing. Do I own a Mcmansion? I rent a piece of crap and live paycheck to paycheck. It's not about people who can or can't afford to buy a house here....it's about having respect. For those who do live here and for those who don't.

Apparently your envy of those who do live here and your odd fetish for just the washout has gotten you so riled that a pay meter on your beloved break has really pissed you off.

May I suggest IOP or go poach some waves at Kiawah.

And thank you for your patronage of Folly establishments, because they wouldn't exist with just us rich locals, god knows I don't support Taco Boy, Mckevlins, Snapper's, Dolphin Deli or anywhere else. I'd rather support Zaxby's, Burger King and Sonic.

OK, I'm done....can't believe I got myself sucked into this ridiculous vortex....time to go polish the Mercedes!!

Anonymous said...

old kook said to anonymous: "So apparently you're only concerned about thw washout?? It's all you keep referring to."

Typical liberal stance by anonymous. He pretends to speak "for the people" but really is only concerned with himself and his buddies (who by the way, are struggling young people who can't afford to pay 3 dollars to park, yet are a driving factor in the economic livelyhood of Folly Beach)... blatant contradiction.

They also use rediculous idiotic cliches like "We don't care how you did it up North", make themselves look stupid, then when called on it, say they were only kidding and who ever called them on their stupidity, is the pea brain.

I will have to agree with anonymous on one issue though, he is right, they are not a herd of cows.... they are a herd of Donkies....EEEEEAAAAWWWWWWWW EEEEEAAAAWWWWWW

Anonymous said...

The up north comment was to dumb it down for you ,cause you kept repeating how they do it elsewhere.
Respect is a two way street,my friend. Your taxing your off island neighbor but not yourself.
This is about FollyBeachers being selfish and trying to keep people from coming to the beach, period .If you can't stop them make them pay .These people are the enemy of surfers.Surfers have good instincts. When someone claims to not like people ,nicknames himself grumpy, and claims kooks cut him off at the washout, well ,surfers are generally very happy people and don't have much in common with grumpy kooks,so I kinda see how we wouldn't see eye to eye.But you know as well as I that this dovetails with gentrification of Folly and the beginning of more no parking signs and the transformation of Folly from a "bohemian laid -back atmosphere " atmosphere to a model of Kiawah ,W.Dunes, and the rest. The surfer atmosphere has to go ,not good for real estate ,too many threatening looking young people. You watch ,if they can't put a meter there ,there'll be a no parking sign.

Anonymous said...

Dude you are too easy....and dumb...

Almost too many "non truths" to address....

Repeating how they do it elsewhere? I asked a simple yes or no question, "Do you think Folly is the only beach town in America to have parking meters?" Of course you won't directly answer the question, instead spinning it with idiotic cliches you later claim as a "dumb down" tactic....donk.

Parking meters at the washout equates to Folly "trying to keep people from coming to the beach"... a toll bridge at Crosby's and I would agree. You being too lazy to walk a few hundred feet or wanting to park your beloved BMW where you can see it, so noone will steal your soft racks has nothing to do with keeping people off the beach.

"Surfers are generally happy"...you've never left South Carolina have you?

I've been an avid surfer for over 35 years and a climber for many years when I lived near the rock. Climbers are generally happy, laid back people willing to share. Surfers are generally dicks, angry faced, arms folded across the chest checking the waves. I've never seen a fight at the rock but seen plenty at the beach.

Now go feed that meter next time Magicseaweed and Surfline exploit an upcoming swell... make sure to call all your bros and have them call theirs... mine and the entire city of Folly Beach's existance depends on it.

Feed the meter.... walk a little bit... or please, quit crying and go to IOP.

You can have the "last word" donk.

Anonymous said...

more attacking the messenger.never mind the issues.
your "surfers are dicks" comments tells all. What a sad sack you are .
We can't take down the meters yet but hey just for you I put a traffic light at the new piggly wiggly.

Anonymous said...

hey instead of being like "other places" that DO have meters, lets be like other places that DON'T have meters.

Anonymous said...

Actually the traffic light at the Pig would be for the folks who live down Sol Lagare road and shoppers of the Pig who live on James Island due to the fact that many people drive 80 miles an hour down Folly Road, without regard for the law or peoples safety. If a traffic light there keeps one person from being killed... then good. Driving in and around Charleston has become a clusterf*ck..and noone seems to have blinkers anymore, especially the younguns.

The issue here is a few "bros" have to walk a block if they want to park for free to surf their beloved one spot....Hope you have a better arguement if you go before city council.

Oh yea, sorry, surfers are kind, generous and gentle people, like Dave Rasta and the Malloy brothers as they appear in movies..... maybe the reality of all those years on the North Shore and in Crowdaphony jaded me.

Rainbows and flowers to all.... bad ole parking meters.

Anonymous said...

you sure got quiet about the issues when I mentioned who pays for renourishment.Ditto the condo issue and who's to blame there. No more complaing about emptying a few trash cans , sounds like you'd rather be on taxpayer welfare, and let us pay for it. Why walk when the state road right there is empty and theres a spot?Oh yeah ,to soak the surfers. Why charge in the winter ? Why no passes like county park? Why don't those parking bastards even write the hours on the sign.(how many times have we stopped people from putting in $ before 10am).
Glad you like the light ,me too.
Surfers are united onthe pay parking, ,and the enemy is selfish residents. You've made it clear you're not in the surfers camp, even though you claimed to have surfed many years ago. What brings you to surfer websites, you just like telling people to go to IOP?
And please spare me your world travels and I promise I''ll do the same..Theres nothing local surfers need to do more than travel .

Anonymous said...

Hey, like again, so totally bro.. renourishment is a waste of money no matter who pays for it. Do you really think common citizens living on Folly make the decision who pays and who doesn'tt?

Oh, and just so you know, I don't really live on Folly but I'm smart and resilient enough where I could give 2 sh!ts about the meters (and I paddle out every chance I get). I tell people about the time constraints and about moving out the gravel lots, not only to save them money but so they dont encourage and feed the beast, ALL THE TIME, lots of em look at me and say, "aaah, it's just a coupla bucks".

I'm no Folly resident but you are still part of the mindless herd...weaving in and out of traffic and driving 70, 80 miles an hour on Folly Road, just to get to the washout and feed the meters.

What a joke that place is. If you payed to surf there as opposed to 8th street or where ever else with free parking, then complain about it, you are an idiot....
