Where futures come from

  Here is a refreshing look at some good old fashioned American made surf accessories, a rarity these days.

This is the disc from Coil Industries. This particular board is 5'4" x 20 1/4" x 2 1/4". This means it is wide, so you can afford to drop a few inches off your normal board length. That width is going to help you fly past slow or flat sections (most of the waves on Folly). The board is also relatively flat which also helps with speed. The bottom starts off with a single concave then runs to a double through the tail to help with rail to rail transitions. The disc comes standard as a quad but would probably work well as a thruster too. Unfortunately we only got them in boring black and white. They kind of look like the Dwart from Rusty. The Discs are $550, which isn't bad for epoxy so come take a look.

New Coils have arrived and with some variety. If the limited color selection of white and black was stopping you from buying a Coil, then your technique for valuing surfboards is probably a little too superficial. If you just like colors however, then this is great news. Come by the shop to see for yourself. There is also a new shape we have in stock from these guys called the disc. I'll put up more about that tomorrow.

Saturday Demo

Go to the Washout Saturday between 9:00am - 1:00pm to try out all of those Channel Islands boards you have been dreaming about. There will be some Dumpster Divers, Motorboats, Neckbeards, and many others to enjoy. Just look for the white CI truck. And don't worry, we will be sure to flip the wave switch to on.

A few waves

Well, the swell held up for us some this morning. A nice break from our typical Folly summer. Nothing epic, but fun (and really crowded). If you couldn't make it out this morning try again tomorrow morning.

(It will probably be gone tomorrow afternoon. )

Hope on the horizon

Maybe some waves early next week. It will be nice to put away the longboard for a little while, but past experience tells me I should keep it close by.

The Vapors

 The Vapors is a small wave performance shortboard from Super. With low entry rocker and more width then a normal shortboard and single to double concave, it is kind of like a Rocket but a little narrower and a little thinner so you might want to ride it an inch or two bigger then you would a rocket or 3 to 5 inches shorter than your normal shortboard.

The Vapors come with a convertible quint fin set up and fins made out of fiberglass instead of plastic.

A trashcan for surf brands

LRG, a new clothing brand we picked up this summer, has sold out to Dillards. Sometimes they don't last too long. All LRG gear marked down to half off. Come by the shop for some inexpensive LRG hats, T's, and boardshorts all 25%-50% off.

Super Demo

 

The Super Surfboard demo was yesterday. The waves weren't great, but at least it wasn't flat. If you couldn't make it out yesterday then don't worry; we were left with some boards to use for the shop demo sometime in August.

 

Lynn Shell, the head shaper at Super, and Jesse Hines were there to hand out boards and catch a few of Folly's own special blend of mushy closeouts.

A Super Movie Premiere / Board Demo

Sunday, May 15 at the washout from 2pm-5pm Super surfboards is holding a board demo and then a premiere for their new movie Sorry We're Open at Ritas (next to the shop) at 7pm. Swell info's forecast isn't looking good for Sunday, but they have been undercalling it lately. So now your whole Sunday is planned out. All you have to do is get to the beach.

Viva la Frog!

It's getting harder and harder to get the authentic surf shop experience nowadays, but there's still some shops out there that have stayed true to their roots. One of my personal favorites is Newport Beach's FROG HOUSE. Opened in 1962... ah, if you want the whole story go here.

What's important is that the FROG HOUSE, like McKevlin's, has always given the burgeoning surf brands a chance, instead of following the current trends. They were the first surf shop to carry Volcom, and with that they are part of the foundation of where Volcom is today... which happens to be here.

The sign above sits on the PCH in Newport Beach, is larger that an 8-foot No Popout sign, and has an even bigger impact as it lies in the heart of the surf industry.

What does this all mean? I have no idea.

Don't shave yet

 We just got in a few of the Neck Beards in from Channel Islands.

Similar outline to the rocket, but with obvious changes to the tail. One of which being the deep v. 

Judging from this, Channel Islands might be looking for some new graphic designers; so if you can scribble on paper you should send them a portfolio. In the mean time come by and check out the Neck Beard.

Premiere number #2

Much less formal then the downtown Waves in our Pocket premiere, last night's premiere at Surfbar was so casual people would just sling their collared shirts over their shoulder.

All in all it was a pretty good night with a great turn out. Up next... maybe Jesse Hines new movie later this month.

Bieber fever!?!?!?

When you cram a bunch of people into a confined area, germs are bound to get passed around. Apparently someone infected with the RJBH-1 strain made an appearance at the movie premiere and it spread like wildfire. The RJBH-1 (Retro Justin Bieber Haircut) epidemic seems to be under control nationwide, but stuff like this tends to hit South Carolina a year or two later. Just like hipsters.
