its twins! (well quads actually...)

...remember when this blog was about surfboards? That got boring real quick. But look at these two 5'6" Neilson coil quads that came in yesterday. I've ridden one and let me tell you, "It's nice."

Back to surf fashion tomorrow. Baba-buoy...

So what does McKevlins count as pop-outs and not pop-outs? Is it a pop-out when it comes from a conglomerate of shapers, or is it a pop-out if it is a certain construction technique (molded, machine cut, vacuum-bagged)? Or is it a pop-out if it comes from someplace other than America? Or is it a pop-out if a non-surfer has a hand in the construction process somewhere along the line?

I'm so confused! I thought McKevlins had the clear cut solution for all things surfing: what to listen to, what to wear, what board to ride...it's all just a bunch of smoke and mirrors and 25% off sales items except on surfboards!

That's it, I'm going back to the days of shin-length Jams from Thalhimers and am hunting down a quiver of Low Pressure Systems and Fox Surfboards! I just hope I can still find a Myrtle Beach Polo Club shirt and a barber who can feather my hair.

Let me first say, I am in no way affiliated with McKevlins or any other shop for that matter. That said, a pop-out is a board that is mass produced (yes, usually outside of the US and usually by someone who has never surfed or probably never will) in a static mold which can not be altered even a mm in any way, and then "popped out" of that mold. Same length, same width regardless of what you the surfer want. It has nothing to do with conglomerates, construction techniques or America. But it does have a lot to do with who you allow to decide what you ride. Surfer shapers can make you whatever you want, but someone in Thailand who doesn't know the difference between a round pin and a round nose can't make squat in my opinion. I can shape you a PU/PE, epoxy, balsa, composite, vacuum-bag...whatever you want. And the last thing it'll be is a pop-out. You can even stop by my house on Folly and tell me just how you want it and watch it all come together. Or you can let someone else decide what you ride, and be happy with whatever that is. Its not a pop-out unless you pop it out of a mold, and so far McKevlins aint havin it. Good for them and for now good for us.

Just to clear up some confusion here, the Coil boards featured in this post are hand-shaped EPS foam glassed with a vacuum-bagged epoxy resin glassjob. 100% surfer-labor, made in Indian Harbour Beach, FL.

So don't fret McKevlin's, your "No Poop-out" integrity is still secure.

You should ask Tom about the Biofoam boards he's doing now. Pretty solid as well.
