What, You Still Use Wax?

XM sent us a sample of their new Clear Grip peel & stick traction. It basically feels like medical tape with tiny holes cut into it.

I decided to try it out on my single fin. After cutting it into appropriate size pieces and sticking it to the board I wasn't sure it was going to work. It didn't feel too sticky.

I got a chance to surf yesterday so I thought I would try it out and it worked much better then I expected. I slid off the board a few times while sitting waiting for waves but when I was up it worked great.

Will something like this replace wax? Probably not. It is nice though not to have to worry about whether I brought wax or not and I won't have to change it when the water warms up. We don't have any of this stuff in stock, but we can get it so let us know if you guys are interested and we'll pick some up.

Summer Starts Early

Barely a week into Spring and already drunk people are running into our shop.

This happened on Friday at about 4:00pm. The driver of the car was seen stumbling towards Snapper Jack's. Slurry Jones?

New Board Co. for Mckevlins... sort of

We just received a shipment of Ricky Carroll surfboards. Ricky Carroll is a company we had years ago and now it is back to fill our much needed lack of epoxy boards.

This particular board is a mini performance longboard...

...with chined rails...

...and a convertible quint fin set-up.

Dims: 7'2" x 21" x 2 3/4" $595

...like I'm wearing nothing at all

We got in some of the new Rip Curl Mirage boardshorts in so I tried on a pair and I have to say, for once the product lives up to the advertising.

just a plain old surfboard...

This is my 5'8" Pat Rawson Impala via ...Lost surfboards that I picked up yesterday when I was home sick from work (hehe). I have to admit, I was not too impressed when I picked it up. No fancy wings or crazy tail shape or chunnel bottom. No gimmicks at all. What was there to get excited about? Maybe a new swell and another sick day would get me excited enough to go down to Swami's, home of the grumpy locals, and test this piece out.
Well, 10 waves later, I can honestly say this board is no b*llshit. As much as I love my D.Diver, it's going to be hard to not ride this board . From wave #1 there were no surprises: it held in the critical (glass-on twin template + stabilizer) and came of the bottom like a bat out of hell. I might have done my best bottom to top turn combo ever on this board, and that was on my first wave. It kept feeling better and better, whether it was a 2-foot insider or a head-high set wave.

Like I said, no gimmicks, just a plain old surfboard that f*cking works. These are all shaped by Pat Rawson, a master craftsman and shaping legend. He comes over from Hawaii during the middle of every month to shape these boards so no intricacies are lost in translation. Get your order in now, the middle of the month will be here soon.

New Channel Islands in the Shop

One that stands out from the usual Pods and Flyers is the new Dumpster Diver.

A wide squatty board with a wide tail, hard edge, and deep single concave come together to form yet another board for Summer's weak surf.
Dims: 5'6"x 19 1/4" x 2 1/4" $650

More Pacific Surf

To better compound the obscenely unbalanced distribution of surf throughout the world it seems as though Chile's earthquake will be sending waves as far as Hawaii. Thought to be the largest waves seen in the island chain state since 1964, Hawaii's south shores will be met with the first waves of the tsunami around 4:20 pm EST. Not to undermine the tragedy of Chile's earthquake or even imply that tsunami waves move slow enough to catch, I think it's the old Atlantic's turn for a bit of swell, even if it does come through at 60 mph.

Surfing...the Runway?

March 14, 2010 at Blu; Mamie Ruth, MEW Designs, and Coral Swim Wear will debut their Summer 2010 lines. I know that many of you aren't in to fashion and probably don't care much for fashion, but all proceeds due go to Surfer's Healing which is an organization you should care about. If you aren't familiar, Surfers Healing is an organization which travels from beach to beach in order to give autistic kids an opportunity to catch a few waves in order to build self confidence. So... Sunday the 14th be sure to head over to Blu to enjoy hors d'œuvres, cocktails, and women in bikinis all for just $20. Get your advance tickets here.

Lost Shop of the Week

Looks like Mckevlin's made Lost Enterprises' website shop of the week. Read more about it here.

...I hope it isn't just another gimmick.

Vinyl

This is The Disco, one of the new models from Sharp Eye this year.

I'm guessing the name came from the short squatty nature of the outline which is like a disk (sort of).

With a wide tail and low entry rocker this board is definitely comparable to a Sub-Scorcher from Lost or Dumpster Diver from CI. Either way, it's a solid thruster for weaker surf. I'm a fan of the single concave through the tail which works really well on Rockets and I'm sure it works on this board too.

Dimensions: 5'8" x 19 1/4" x 2 3/8" and only $470

Mavericks gets out of control.

Mavericks contest is today and conditions are epic (thanks El Niño).

Maybe a little too epic. The contest booth got washed out along with several spectators leaving a victim with a broken leg and another with a broken finger.

Check out the live cam here.

I got back yesterday.

I was in Costa Rica last week and we got some fun surf. It was a little smaller then it could have been on this day so we went into the mountains.

We spent the day here.

on the way back down the river we ran into this guy. Sloths usually only come down from the trees to poop, hopefully he took care of that before we got there.

...Surfer, Dude.

...stopped by the ...Lost factory yesterday to perve on some boards. It's always interesting to see who's getting boards (lots of McKevlin's customs) from Matt and crew. Needless to say I was shocked when I saw a couple of boards for surfer dude Matthew McConaughey.
