Some more new stuff from CI

This might be a bad idea...

I like surfing and I like riding my motorcycle (despite previous accidents) so I decided the best way to enjoy both would be to ride my motorcycle to the beach and then surf. The problem was, of course, what to do with my board. Well I bought a surf rack for a bicycle and with a little modification attached it to my motorcycle. A bad idea? Well it does come with a few risks*, but only time will tell.

* Risks

• the rack breaks, my board falls to the road, it is run over and destroyed
• a gusty wind blows me into oncoming traffic resulting in a horrible mess of gore
• the surfboard somehow twists around, and ends up sitting across the back of the seat lengthwise with the surfboard acting as a wing, the motorcycle then becomes airborne

New for Spring '11: Tail Patches!!!!

 We have island scene patches...

 ...grey patches...

 ...multi-colored patches...

 ... carbon fiber patches...

 ... clear patches...

... and graphite patches!

Why? Because that is what is cool this year. If you don't have a board with tail patches throw it away NOW, because it won't work right anymore.

Actually, tail patches add strength to a weak spot in the tail between the foward and rear fins and change how the tail flexes. They have been around just as long as the carbon strip stringers of the 80's, but suddenly every company is jumping on the bandwagon.

Way Easier then Glassing

 Linseed oil is just about as expensive as resin, but smells much better. Kind of like tea.

 All you have to do is brush it on...

...then let it dry.

Drawbacks

• It takes almost two days to dry. Especially this time of year.
• It only works on wooden planks made out of Paulownia

Simpler Times

The only bake sales I have ever seen have been from NORML at Cof C and were disappointing. Back in '82 however, they were rad. Check out the caliber of customer. They look loaded (with money).

You're Not the Only One Who Hates Cold Water

These fish hate cold water too.

In fact, they hate it so much they all left.



All along the beach, tens of thousands of dead Menhaden washed up last night.

I'd rather get picked apart by seagulls and pigeons too.

Speaking of horrible smells, the poll results are in and you're all sick (me too). Only 7% of people don't pee in their wetsuit. 69% pee in their suit all day long while 17% only pee as a last resort and a disturbing 5% pee in their suit to kick it on people. Stay away from the latter.

Look Close

New Years Day was warm and as a result, foggy on the beach...



...but if you took the time to squint your eyes long enough you could almost see the waves. They weren't great, but they were much better then they had been the days before. The water is still freezing. I hope you had a chance to make it out. 

Do You Pee In Your Wetsuit?

I do, and recently thought everyone did. Well after some discussion at the shop I wanted to take a poll to find out how many other sick bastards are out there pissing on themselves. Voting is on the right.

Channel Islands Motor Boat

Here is Rob tearing through the surf on his eco-friendly vegetable oil diesel engine motorboat. Why is he in such a hurry? To deliver new Channel Islands to Mckevlins...



...Like the new Motorboat. Described as a cross over between a biscuit and a Gravy, it looks a lot more like a cross between a Gravy and a  dumpster diver. Which is good news because the gravy needed a little more beef through the tail. The Dims on this particular Motorboat are 5'8" x 19 3/4" x 2 1/2.

Have a Merry Christmas! (at home because the waves are flat)

While Ian surfs in head high bacteria ridden waste water, I was hoping for a little Christmas surf today. To my disappointment it is flat again. I guess I was bad. Oh well, there is always  next year. Merry Christmas.

Mr. Hankey Would Go...

It's been a moist one over here, and no doubt the water quality isn't very good. But sometimes you have to weigh risk and reward and ask yourself "What would Mr. Hankey do?"

Well, Mr. Hankey went, and he even hooted me into a couple nice lefts. I think I still have a piece of him stuck in my ear.

New From Lost

You guys may have seen Slater with something like this in Quiksilver adds, well Lost saw it too and thought it was a good idea. They call it Twin Fusilage Technology. The idea is that the two stringers 13" apart through the middle of the board keep the board rigid under the surfer's body reducing unwanted flex from pumping down the line. The tail is stringerless to store energy under your back foot that snaps back for bursts of speed out of turns. The carbon fiber on the tail elongates the flex and strengthens the tail. The carbon fiber on the nose keeps it from snapping off when you're vertically slashing during low tide at the Washout.  

Fins from Machado...

...so of course there is some bamboo in them. It has been said that Rob even handpicked the bamboo for these fins from his time drifting around the jungles of Melali. Then he used eco-whiteout to hand sign each center fin from the set after drawing a wing on the side fins.

The carbon fiber on the base of the fin is for drive. The bamboo stores energy by flexing into turns and then straightening out to give you more speed when coming out of the turn. The side fins are similar to the EA template from Future with Vector II concave. The slightly smaller rear similar to the F4 template. Come by the shop and check them out just in time for the holidays.*
