Calif#*king go home

Now, there is nothing particularly funny about these people. Typical tourist types here for a little late season R and R. The reason they have found their way to your computer screen is due to a conversation myself and the gentleman had in passing. After commenting on how small the waves were and telling me that that he was from California where there are real waves, he went on to incredulously ask "How can people surf here?" Now I usually don't mind talking with customers about their state of origin, but when it is accompanied by a sense of entitlement I don't want to hear it.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate people from California. I just hate people who think that I care that they are from California.

Yeah, he looks like he could shred the gnarl...nice gut! And nice purple wife beater. Is that his wife in the shot? F#*k em.

Sorry, that "wife beater" tee is blue. I appoligize to Mr. Cali.

My question is, did he say where in California they were from?

Chances are good that a) he doesn't live on the coast anyway and his knowledge of "waves" is what he sees on news footage during a big swell or for that matter Baywatch. B) He doesn't surf anyway, because if he did he'd realize that the EC is sufable and it's all based on weather anyway. C) He's a douche.

This being said by a native Californian who's knows his only entitlement is to get the hell out of your way when a good set wave comes.

apparently my typing is for crap today, apologies for the typos above.

Being from California myself and relocating to Folly 3 years ago I can somewhat understand the man's comments. I was born and raised in Hermosa Beach and grew up no more than 3 blocks from the ocean my entire life. When I first came to Folly I was surprised at the amount of surf shops and the number of people in the water on any day with basically no waves. You find yourself asking "why are there so many people that surf here?" when you first come from an area that on a crappy day has waves bigger than most of the year here it is hard to understand. Of course you realize "why not surf here" and it is much better to see people embrace the surf culture than countless other possibilities. But it still can be shocking to an outsider at first when you come to Folly Beach and see so many surfers and think "wow , am I really in South Carolina?!" LoL

why is he in a surf shop in south carolina?

hate to run into his fat a$$ in the lineup.like lost boy said f#*k em!

Yea, a whole 3 surf shops in the Charleston area... That is kinda overkill now that you mention it.

Anyone who "grew up 3 blocks from the ocean" their entire life, shouldn't even think to ask themselves "why". I rekon I think to myself, "why would you think to ask yourself such a stupid f*cking question"? LoL

"I rekon I think to myself" Grumpy local is such an idiot.

Touche'! At least I don't ask myself stupid f*cking questions. LoL

Guess this means we can't be friends and take walks on the beach together and stuff.

Makes me sad.

Caliboy said he grew up by the beach his whole life, he didn't say he surfed. Maybe he only posed and didn't surf at all, thus he has no clue what it means to be a "surfer". Which would explain why he has to wonder why people who live by the ocean, any ocean, surf in it.

Hey just saw the responses on here, I made the above long post about being from California. Not sure I understand why the negative responses? Was just trying to give some perspective from an outside point of view. I never questioned "why" people surf here, just said it makes you question at first to see so many people that do. Anyways, please excuse my stupid f*cking thinking. I will not be making anymore posts, you win :)

This guy looks like he is in his late 50s or early 60s. As we all know back in the day, California was the surf capital of the world. Well at least as far as most Americans were concerned. So, most non surfers, as I'm sure this guy is has tunnel vision when it comes to wave riding. Hell, he probably doesn't know that Indo and S. Africa are hot spots...and didn't realize that a hurricane and cold fronts can actually effect the Atlantic and produce the occasional ridable wave. But, like most people in the world believe, Cali is where you go to surf. Lets face it, we all wish we had their waves but not their crowded and overpriced lifestyle. When I used to live in Florida, we all hated the New Yorkers with their "I'm from THE CITY" attitude...but still I say "f*ck em"!

Would you pay for waves? Then come to califrigginfornia. I got a room open for you.

Hey Hollywood don't take it personal man... it is what it is.

Asking yourself why people surf in an ocean is a stupid question. Sorry if that hurts your feelings. Your input will be missed.

It's sometimes hard to distinguish anon responses.. maybe the other anon solicited some extra negativity in there.

Even if I was being sarcastic and facetious with whole dumb southern "I rekon", I'll say again.... When I see some anon being a prick and calling people names on the interent, I rekon I think to myslef, "what a f*cking tool"...

So stick anon

Anyone that has surfed for more than a weekend vacation would never ask why the waves are small, and how do people surf here, you would probably ask if has been flat for a while... in any surfshop, there are pictures of good days around the counter.....

I too grew up in California, surfing and climbing. Married a southern girl and came back east or south or wherever this hell-hole is.
First and only time I went looking for climbing places in North Carolina, I couldn't believe how puny the rock was. Compared to Yosemite, Looking Glass is nothing. I don't see how people even climb there much less surf here. Actually, it sucks so bad on the east coast, I don't even understand why you people wake up on a daily basis.
